Isidora Earrings

  • This delicate design is based on earrings depicted in a painted mummy portrait found in the Museum's antiquities collection at the Getty Villa.

    - Gold-plate tipped with freshwater pearls
    - Gentle movement when worn
    - Earrings are 1 1/4 inch H (2 inches H including the hook) x 3/4 inch W

An elegant Egyptian woman painted about 2,000 years ago, Isidora wears a braided hairstyle that was fashionable in the early second century A.D. She is shown accessorized with the gold and pearl earrings, a gold hairpin and wreath, and three necklaces heavy with gold and jewels. An inscription on the cartonnage, or linen mummy case, identifies the portrait's subject as ICIDOPA (translated as Isidora).
