Marine creatures-including this playful octopus, a bream, gurnard, starfish, scallop, mussel, and cockle-- decorate a terracotta plate (pinax or pinakion in ancient Greek) used to serve fish. Nearly 1000 examples of fish-plates are known, the majority made in southern Italy where the "fruits of the sea" were especially prized by history's first celebrity chefs and their customers.
